Riya was born in Kolkata, West Bengal on 24 January 1981. She is the daughter and granddaughter of Moon Sen, an actress who died in 2011. Before moving to Mumbai, Riya lived in Kolkata, West Bengal, with her sister Raima Sen and her parents. Her father, Bharat DevVarma, is a Tripura royal. Her paternal grandmother Ila Devi, who was a princess from Cooch Behar and whose younger sister Gayatri Devi became the Maharani at Jaipur, was her paternal grandfather.

Indira, her paternal great-grandmother, was the only child of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad I of Baroda. Riya’s maternal great grandfather Adinath Sen, a prominent Kolkata businessman and a relative to former Union Law Minister Ashoke Kumar Sen, was the Diwan (or a Minister) of the Maharaja in Tripura. Although their official papers bear the surname Dev Varma, their screen credits credit the sisters under their mother’s maiden names.

Riya attended Loreto School in Kolkata and Rani Birla Girls College, a University of Calcutta. After graduating from Loreto House, Riya studied at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, and then she began to make jewelry as a hobby. Most of the clothes she wears in commercials and films are her own designs. Riya has been trained in Kathak under Vijayshree Chaudhury.

She has completed Level 1 of 5 levels in belly dance and kickboxing. Riya started her career in the film industry by working as a model and commuting to Mumbai from Kolkata using public transport. She moved from Ballygunge Circular Road, south Kolkata, to Mumbai after she had made it in the film industry. In 2004, she moved to Juhu where she lives with her sister. Shaadi No. 1 was being filmed. She was injured in an accidently run over by a stuntman’s motorbike while filming Shaadi No. 1. Riya Sen completed her schooling at Loreto House, Kolkata, and graduated from Rani Birla Girls’ College, Kolkata. Riya also is a certified fashion designer and did a Course in Fashion Designing from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Mumbai. Riya Sen made her first on-screen appearance in 1991 as a child artist in the Bollywood film Vishkanya as Young Nishi.
